CAMPUS ORGANIZATION OF THE WEEK: Office of Community Engagement at Eastern Washington University

This week the Campus Organization of the Week Award goes to….the Office of Community Engagement at Eastern Washington University!

The Office of Community Engagement at Eastern Washington University's mission goes as follows: "Connecting EWU to the wider community though meaningful, reciprocal partnerships in order to enrich student learning, address critical community need and foster a culture of civic responsibility and community engagement." We chose them as our winners this week because of their innovative ways of fundraising to benefit the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy. They launched a campaign on February 14th called 26 Days of Kindness. According to their Facebook page the point of the campaign is to “honor the lives lost at Sandy Hook Elementary”.

One of the activities within this campaign was, you guessed it, a Harlem Shake! Now you might ask yourself, how can doing a Harlem Shake, like almost every other university benefit a charity? Instead of just your standard group dance party to the popular song by Baauer, they decided to have every participant make a donation before they could participate. As you can see from the video below, quite a few students, staff and faculty members participated!

There are also many other events held throughout the 26 Days of Kindness. These include a teddy bear drive, police appreciation dinners, food drives, bake sales and many other events that don’t raise money but that have as their aim to spread kindness and cheer around campus. We want to give a shout out to them for planning an awesome fundraiser and for doing it in an innovative way! Hopefully they're able to raise a lot of money for a great cause!
